A Piece Inspired by the Hunting Plate of Shapur II

This design draws inspiration from a fourth-century Sasanian gilded silver plate depicting King Shapur II hunting a wild bull on horseback. Shapur II reigned for nearly seventy years (309–379 CE), one of the longest reigns in ancient Iranian history, during a period marked by prolonged warfare with Rome and nomadic groups on the empire's frontiers.

Such "royal hunting plates" were crafted in Sasanian court workshops and often given as diplomatic gifts, with examples found as far away as Siberia. In ancient Iranian thought, the hunt symbolized the king's triumph over chaos, and the imagery evoked farr-e izadi—the divine glory marking legitimate rulers. The plate was far more than decoration: it was a statement of Shapur II as a divinely sanctioned king, upholding order over chaos.
